Monday 5 October
The group all got together in our studio to arrange our first outing along the route. In pairs we were allocated to some elements we had to focus on, from light to sound, height to smells, materials, activities, sun etc. As usual the weather was not our friend and it poured down. Despite this we still went on sketching from under trees or umbrellas. Needless to say we were drenched as were our sketchbooks. The route was very interesting and the diploma students pointed out so many things we were missing. I could tell that we had so many areas of skill to cover but it was great learning from fellow students who had once been in our position, it was a sort of reassurance. We all got as many sketches as we could along with photographs and various findings, including smelly seaweed!
When we got back together in the studio that afternoon. The diploma students had arranged some games to get us more interactive with each other and with our creative thoughts. They certainly encouraged crazy and wild ideas. By the end of the first day we had established that ‘leisure’ as our theme meant that the best way to present it was as a game. Monopoly had been decided as the initial idea for the day and exhausted we all went home…
